Last weekend we started to paint! As exciting as that is there was some frustration involved when I realised that even perfectly plastered walls need some prepping before you can start to paint. That means we needed to go over them with a scraper to remove any small splashes and then go over them again with fine sandpaper. Small nicks and scratches needed to be filled, then sanded down again and finally we wiped down the walls with a damp cloth to remove the dust. Because we are painting straight onto new plaster the first coat needs to be diluted with water as the paint would dry too quickly otherwise and not give an even finish. The second coat is undiluted and after that we can use a higher quality paint for the final coat or two, depending on the result. The thing about painting is that I only ever remember the result and totally forget about the hard work and aches from doing it, especially painting ceilings and awkward corners. But having now readjusted my expectations for the amount of work involved and the time it will take to complete it I'm happily painting along....
